Andoversford come from behind to beat Abbeymead Rovers 5-3 in a thriller

In a thoroughly entertaining game down at Winchcombe School, Andoversford beat Abbeymead Rovers to stay top of the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League division two.

11th placed Abbeymead led the match 2-1 at half-time, courtesy of an excellent goal by 16 year old Finn Gwillin who was drafted from the youth squad.

Andoversford forward Ibrahim Berisha turned the match on its head on 67 minutes to give the hosts the lead. However, moments later the visitors drew level thanks to Montell Smith.

But the league leaders had too much quality in the end, and goals from former Bishops Cleeve and Cheltenham Saracens striker Kai Mahon sealed the victory.

Visiting manager Nick Mcguirk wasn’t too disappointed, despite losing the match.

“I’m really pleased with how the lads played. We have got some great young talent coming through, especially the 16 – 18 year olds who played,” said Mcguirk.

“We made a really good account of ourselves, and maybe we are a little bit disappointed that we didn’t get at least a draw.”

Andoversford stay top of the division, whilst Abbeymead remain in the middle of the pack.
