A first half double and an early second half own goal saw Wycombe Wanderers defeat Cheltenham Town who now sit seven points from safety.
New signing from Forest Green Rovers, Matty Taylor tried to inspire a second half comeback with a lovely volley into the back of the net just 13 minutes into his debut.
However it wasn’t enough as Wycombe closed out the game which gives Darrell Clarkes side an even bigger mountain to climb as they are now seven points from safety with 18 games remaining.
Match Report:
It was a positive start for the home side with Tom Pett volleying just wide of the post. Minutes later Curtis Davies alone in the 6 yard box poked the ball towards goal but straight into the keepers hands.
However it was the away side who struck the first blow with Jack Grimmer bundling a header over the line at the back post in the 20th minute.
Just eight minutes later Wycombe doubled their lead on the counter attack with 36 year old Garath McCleary powering the ball into the far corner to put them two ahead at the break.
It then went from bad to worse for the Robins as Wycombe were awarded a penalty. Despite Luke Southwood saving the initial spot kick the rebound was deflected off Curtis Davies and put into his own net putting Wycombe in dreamland.
Deadline day signing Matty Taylor came on at the break and scored just 13 minutes into his debut for the Robins with a lovely half volley into the top right corner.
The home side had a few more half chances from corners but Matt Bloomfields side did well to close out the 3-1 victory putting them 6 points above the drop zone.
Town have an important trip on Tuesday night to Burton in what is now a must win game if they want any chance of survival in League one.
