Quedgeley Wanderers succumb to first loss of the season after losing 4-1 to the University of Bristol

Quedgeley Wanderers lost top spot in the Marcliffe Gloucestershire County League to the University of Bristol after suffering a 4-1 home defeat to their visitors.

Wanderers manager Beckem Foley was disappointed by the result.

“It’s a disappointing result against a very good side. It’s our first loss of the season. Those things can leave quite a big impact if we don’t do things right from this point onwards.

“We were punished on the very small mistakes. In other games we probably get away with those but when you’re playing top opposition you can’t give away those mistakes.”

Alfie Pledger scored Quedgeley’s only goal of the game, however they created chances in the game that Foley was proud of.

“We’re losing games 4-1 but we’re still creating good opportunities, still having good possession of the ball and still staying in the game even when it seems like it’s lost.

“We can be positive about those moments; we’ve just got to be in a better position not to get punished by mistakes.”

After suffering their first league defeat of the season, Foley is determined to keep his squad motivated going into the next fixture, where they’ll face Barnwood United in the County Cup.

“For me it’s to keep people motivated and switched on. We just need to keep going through our basics and our ethos in terms of what we’re going after and what the end goal is.

“That’ll keep people switched on and to keep checking and challenging other people, the players and everyone involved so we can make sure that we are all pushing towards the right direction.”
