Bishops Cleeve manager Paul Collicutt identifies key improvement needed as team chase playoffs

Paul Collicutt has revealed one simple improvement that Bishops Cleeve need after their 2-0 victory over Bashley on Saturday.

Collicutt’s 350th Southern League game ended in victory as his side continues to carve its way up the table.

The Mitres sit fifth on 56 points after 28 games played and snuck into the final playoff place after their weekend victory against Bashley.

Despite the win, there are still aspects where Collicutt noticed clear room for improvement at Kayte Lane.

“I was pleased in keeping a clean sheet,” Collicutt stated, “it’s something that last season, you know, we did well in the way of not conceding goals last year. This year, we haven’t kept as many clean sheets as I’d have hoped. Like anything, scoring goals is the one that wins you games of football.

“Unfortunately, this year, I think we have scored 55 goals, and the teams around us have scored more goals than we have.”

Bishops Cleeve have scored the fewest goals of the top seven teams in the Southern League. Second-placed Malvern Town are league leaders in goals scored, on 73. Despite the increased tally, they sit just seven points ahead of Collicutt’s side. Scoring is still a key aspect where Collicutt would like to see obvious improvement.

“So that’s the one thing that we need to start doing, scoring more goals than we have done. We’ve kept two clean sheets back-to-back, which helps. So as I said, we go from there.”

The Mitres are due to face Falmouth Town away from home on Tuesday night, but wet weather may stop their gruelling away journey from going ahead.
