Jake Bickerstaff on Cheltenham’s result against MK Dons, and developing as a player within the team

Cheltenham Town forward Jake Bickerstaff explained that having a manager and club that believes in you, helps massively as a player.

The Robins haven’t been getting the results they’ve been hoping for since the start of the new year, however their 3-2 result against MK Dons on Saturday sparked a lot of positives for the team, especially for Bickerstaff who was amongt the scorers.

“I thought we played well to be honest, it’s just these fine moments in games which is letting us down.

“I felt we started the game well, and then two goals go in but that’s just when as a team we have to pick ourselves back up.”

The forward played a key role throughout the game, alongside Isaac Hutchinson who also scored during the game on his return to the club.

The Robins showed resilience, withstanding an early response from Bickerstaff in the first half

“I managed to get out on my feet and hit and luckily it went in, I think it gave us a bit of boost as a team.

“Scoring before half time is massive because you go into the changing room and it’s a lot more positive; you have this feeling inside it’s just a shame that didn’t happen.”

Bickerstaff found himself playing in a different position to normal, with Steve Cotterill’s trust building his confidence as a player within the team.

“I think if you can play in more than one position, it helps you just as a footballer in general, I’m just happy the gaffer’s got the trust in me to play in different positions.

“I think some performances sometimes demotivate you or give you a bit of a setback, but after this result, we’ve got three games in a week, and I think we’re going to pick up some good results.”

The 24-year-old joined the Robins on a deal until the end of the 2025/26 season from Wrexham AFC.

Since joining the club at the beginning of the season, he has firmly cemented himself as a consistent starter within the squad, playing a key role within the team.

“Settling here was what I wanted to do since I came in, it was a little target I set myself and I think I can show what I do.

“It’s just about getting as many minutes as you can to improve, it sounds a bit cliché but you do some on as a player.

The forward has built a firm connection with the manager since coming in, praising his commitment to the club.

“He’s a great manager and you can see that the town love him and we’ve had some incredible results, all we need is one result and we’ll be on a good run.”
