South-west Quilter Nations Series round up: Rees-Zammit back for a losing Wales and Arrundell shines as England thump Fiji.

England made it two from two in this year’s Quilter Nations Series after beating Fiji 38-18 in an extremely physical encounter with both sides showcasing individual brilliance.

Bath Rugby’s Henry Arundell came on in the 66th minute and added some breath-taking pace to the game.

He scored in the 75th minute, after Marcus Smith grubber kicked the ball behind Fiji’s backline. Arundell out-paced two Fijians with ease and dotted down on his return to an England shirt.

Steve Borthwick has a difficult decision to make selection wise in the back three.

On the other wing, Exeter Chief’s player Immanuel Feyi-Waboso played the full 80 minutes and managed to score out wide in the first half. Captain for the day and Bristol Bears loose-head prop Ellis Genge also put in a great shift, powering his way over for five points which was his seventh try for his country.

Bristol Bears duo Kalaveti Ravouvou and Viliame Mata featured for Fiji, demonstrating their power, pace and incredible offloading ability.

‘The Messi of rugby’ Fin Russell couldn’t pull out any heroics to help his nation as Scotland narrowly lost 25-17 to the All Blacks. Bath’s Josh Bayliss featured as well as Bristol’s Tom Jordan, but the substitutes weren’t enough to stop Damian McKenzie from going over in the corner in the 74th minute.

The big news of the weekend was failed NFL star and Bristol Bear Louis Rees-Zammit’s return to international rugby as he was on the bench against Argentina for his country Wales.

Wales however lost the game 52-28, with Argentina proving their resilience and quality. Gloucester rugby captain Tomos Williams had a mixed affair, scoring a try in the 15th minute but then getting sin binned in the 43rd minute. Max Llewellyn (Gloucester), Daffyd Jenkins (Exeter), Archie Griffin (Bath) and Freddie Thomas (Gloucester) all featured for Wales.

On the winning side in this one, Bristol Bear player Santiago Grondona came off the bench for the last 20 minutes at number eight. He managed to score the last try of the game as he picked the ball up from a metre out and barrelled over the line.

In the clash of the weekend, Bath Rugby’s Thomas Du Toit helped a 14-man South Africa overcome France 32-17 in a statement win for world champions the Springboks.

What’s next in the internationals? Italy host South Africa, England play New Zealand, Wales will be hoping for a win against Japan, France play Fiji, Ireland play Australia and Scotland face Argentina.
