Ella Powys, 20, says she uses the UOG netball club as an outlet to escape from the hectic life of a journalism student.
“If you’ve had a hard day at uni and then you go to netball training in the evening it makes everything feel so much better that you end up just forgetting about it.
“I can honestly say I’ve met the loveliest group of girls from the club and it has really shaped my university experience.”

Powys mentioned how she started the sport when she was only a nine-years-old and fell in love with it instantly.
“I got into netball at primary school in my PE lessons and remember really enjoying playing the games.
“When I came to university I knew I wanted to do a sport because my brother had played rugby and he would always talk about how much of a sense of community there was.
“I sort of fell into it at the welcome fair and they just seemed like such a nice group of girls which I wanted to be apart of.”
Last season, Powys joined the committee for the club where she played the role of Social Secretary.

This year, she is now the club’s Treasurer and has the responsibility of looking after the funding.
“Being on the committee has definitely helped with my life skills in general.
“It has forced me to take some responsibility and organisation which I can also use as an outlet from everyday stresses.”
Powys reflected on this being her final year with the club and how she feels moving forward.

“It’s really nice to know that the club is going to be kept in good hands after we leave.
“We’ve had such a good intake of first years so I know they will do me proud!
“My advice to anyone thinking about uni sport would just be to put yourself out there and try different things because you never know what you could get out of it.”
