Wolves Women striker Jade Cross says their 8-0 battering of local rivals Stourbridge is a ‘big statement’ and has tipped the Old Gold to defend their Birmingham County Cup trophy this season.
Cross netted a hat-trick in Wolves’ rout of the Glassgirls on Sunday, and made clear how impressive the performance from the whole team was.
Amber Hughes netted a brace, while Beth Roberts, Sophie Bramford and Anna Morphet completed the scoring at New Bucks Head.
“It was brilliant,” Cross said. “We obviously want to go far in the FA Cup, so to beat Stourbridge who are in the same league as us so comfortably is a big statement. An 8-0 win and a really good team performance.”
Cross has struggled for pitch time of late, given the stellar form of October’s player of the month Liv Fergusson and star player Destiney Toussaint.
The experienced forward was brought back in by manager Dan McNamara for the Stourbridge clash, and certainly repaid his faith in her.
“Any goal is great, but it’s been a while since I’ve netted a hat-trick,” she said. “So it’s really pleasing and hopefully there are plenty more of them to come in the next few months.”
McNamara’s side host Boldmere SMW in the quarter-final of the BCC on Sunday, and after winning the competition in three of the last four seasons, Cross set herself and her peers the goal of retaining the trophy from last season.
“We want to go far in every competition,” she insisted. “We won the competition last season and want to win it again. Boldmere are a good team so it should be a tough game but hopefully we can take this performance into next weekend.”
