West Brom Women defender inspired by Manchester United and Leicester City pairing

West Bromwich Albion Women defender Izzy Green says she’s “learning” from a Women’s Super League pairing whilst patiently waiting for a first team chance.

Leicester City’s Jess Reavill and Manchester United’s Lucy Newell have seen plenty of loan minutes at the heart of Albion’s defence whilst Green has been sidelined with injury from which she returned on Sunday.

From the stands, the 20-year-old has identified many improvements in her own game through watching the Reavill and Newell partnership.

“It was great to get 90 minutes out there,” Green said. “I’m really happy about being back in from the starting line-up as well.

“To play is important for me to get back in for the end of the season just to get some minutes in my legs.

“Lucy and Jess are just class players and I’m learning from them as well. They’ve got the experience and then, you know, playing for England and top clubs at WSL level.

“It’s just learning what I can from them in training from just watching them if I am on the side-lines. When I get my chance, I want to perform and show why I’m starting.”

The Baggies fell to an unfortunate defeat at the bet365 Stadium in their penultimate game of the season, where Green made her first start for 11 weeks.

“I thought Stoke was a good game for us. I thought we did play well in parts of the game.

“Ultimately we just didn’t do enough to get the three points. Everyone at the moment is a bit gutted.

“We started the game well for the first 15, 20 minutes and got ourselves a goal. There were two good goals for them, one of them on the counter.

“For the other one, just defending in and around the box – that needs to be better. I think it’s difficult to pinpoint where we went wrong until we go back to training and we watch it back.

“Until we go back, it’s just having a look where we could’ve done better. I think in-possession might have killed us a little bit and then they transitioned really well.”

Albion have a final league game of the season against Newcastle United before they finish the campaign, they welcome FA WNL Northern Premier Division champions to the Valley Stadium in Redditch.

“We’ll be buzzing for Newcastle,” Green said. “We’ll prepare well again during the week, we’re really excited. I think it’ll be a really good game.

“The last time we played it was only a one-nil loss. I thought we did well defensively.

“It’ll be the same again and we’ll do our best to get a result.”
