“We have to give the fans something to get excited about” – Swansea City boss Luke Williams ahead of hosting Sheffield Wednesday

Swansea City boss Luke Williams believes that a change in shape may benefit his side ahead of hosting Sheffield Wednesday this week after a 1-0 win away to Bristol City on Sunday.

“It is another huge test; they have a brilliant manager (Danny Röhl) that is really in tune with his team. They are a tough group, we came here (Ashton Gate) against a team in really good form, with a really good manager that has got them well-organised and well-motivated. We have to find the energy to be able to go into another game in a similar way and try and bring as a bare minimum again that fight and concentration to remain in the game.”

The Swans were without a win in their previous six before Sunday’s televised clash with the Robins and sit in 16th, nine points above the drop zone. However, a first goal from Josh Tymon in the second-half ended that run of form and helped lift the South Wales side away from the relegation zone.

“I think we have given them (the fans) some really good performances at home,” Williams said on the prospect of hosting Wednesday.

“I think we are in a bit of a transition at the moment. We are changing the formation a little bit in the last couple of games. I think Matt Grimes leaving is a big impact because he played every minute of every game and is quite a unique player. We are adapting to life without him and that is an opportunity for other people and it is another opportunity for me to see if I can help the group.

“I think we have the opportunity to change into a back four as well because we have played so many times with a back four. We have to give the fans something to get excited about at home, we have to combine the grit and determination that we showed (against Bristol City) with some more spells of dominating the ball and creating more box entries.”

Williams’ side have operated in a back five and a back three in their last two fixtures, but did utilise a back four in their heavy 5-1 defeat to Norwich at the end of January.

“I have to try to be confident, I have worked with teams set up in a back three and a four-man midfield or a back three and a three-man midfield with two strikers. I have worked with a team in a 4-3-3, with split strikers in a diamond, many things now. I have been in the game a long time; we coaches try to make a formation that suits more players.”

Swansea have had a brilliant record against the Owls in the last six years, having not lost in their last seven meetings against the South Yorkshire side.
