“Proud of the lads and the staff” – George Skivington praises Gloucester after first Premiership win of the season against Harlequins

Gloucester Rugby claimed their first win of the season, battling back to beat Harlequins 26–17 in a fiercely contested match.

Director of Rugby George Skivington said he was proud of his side’s performance following a month of focused training and preparation.

“I’m just really proud of the lads and the staff – we’ve had a big month, we’ve worked really hard. We’ve tried to tighten our game up, and I think the lads did a great job out there today,” he said.

“We would’ve taken a win at the start of the game, but I thought we deserved it at the end.

“Quins came back a few times, and we had to fight really hard. But the fight, the attitude, the things we’ve talked about behind closed doors – I think they really shone through.”

Despite the victory, Skivington insisted Gloucester will focus on taking each game as it comes as they head into a packed festive schedule.

“I think we’re probably starting from a bit further back, so it’s one of those situations. From our point of view, we’ve had a good, honest month and really gone after a few things.

“It’s only one game, but seeing the lads transfer that work into the performance is important. There’s still plenty we can be better at today.”

The Cherry and Whites kick off their European Rugby Champions Cup campaign next week at Kingsholm against French side Castres.

Skivington is looking forward to the challenge and to playing the first game at home, where Gloucester boast an impressive record.

“So we’ve got another game at Kingsholm next weekend, which is really important to us. Our home record last year was excellent, and we thoroughly enjoy playing here – we want everyone to have a great time when they visit.

“We owe a few wins at home, so that’s important, but we’ve got a run of nine games now – a block of Europe and Premiership fixtures – so we’ll have to manage it carefully.

“Having a few players returning makes it easier, and honestly, that was the loudest I’ve heard the shed this season.”
