Forest Green Rovers vs Cheltenham Town: Combined XI ahead of this weekend’s postponed fixture

This weekend was meant to be the second and final meeting of the season between League Two’s two Gloucestershire sides: Forest Green Rovers and Cheltenham Town.

However, due to the coronavirus outbreak taking its toll on European football, the game has been called off, with the EFL aiming to get the season back underway on April 30.

With the Robins flying up in fifth-place and Rovers down in 11th, the sides have both had good seasons, with the latter slumping down the league table in 2020, taking away some of the gloss from their campaign.

Here’s the combined team, purely based on this season’s performances from the individuals…

GK: Scott Flinders (Cheltenham)

Flinders is one of the Robins’ most consistent performers, but the goalkeeper suffered a horrific leg break against Oldham Athletic in January.

Rovers’ goalkeepers have been coming in and out of the side too much, with Mark Cooper naming four different ‘keepers in his line-ups this season.

RB: Liam Shephard (Forest Green)

The Welsh right-back has had an injury-struck season, missing the start of the campaign and picking up a few knocks in the games he has played.

However, he is one of Forest Green’s strongest attacking outlets and offers a solid defensive option for Cooper’s team as well.

CB: Farrend Rawson (Forest Green)

Rawson has had an outstanding individual season for Rovers – marking himself as the senior central defender at the New Lawn.

CB: Will Boyle (Cheltenham)

Boyle has been one of Cheltenham’s most consistent performers this season in a very solid defensive line.

LB: Joseph Mills (Forest Green)

Mills is Forest Green’s top goalscorer with eight goals in all competitions, and like his team-mate Shephard on the other side, he is a very dangerous attacking option.

Chris Hussey of the Robins is also a tremendous player, and makes this a difficult choice, with arguably the two strongest League Two left-backs at the two Gloucestershire teams.

RM: Ryan Broom (Cheltenham)

Broom has attracted interest from League One sides with his impressive performances on the right-hand side for Michael Duff’s side.

The 23-year-old is the Robins’ top scorer with eight goals so far during the 2019/20 campaign.

CM: Ebou Adams

The former Norwich City youngster has been arguably Rovers’ strongest midfielder this season and has become an instant fan favourite at the New Lawn.

His powerful runs through midfield means he is by far the most-fouled player in League Two as well.

CM: Jake Doyle-Hayes (Cheltenham)

Doyle-Hayes is on loan from Premier League side Aston Villa and has impressed at the Jonny-Rocks this season.

It is unlikely the Irish midfielder will stay at the Robins next season after a fantastic campaign on a personal note.

LM: Jack Aitchison (Forest Green)

Like Doyle-Hayes, Aitchison is on loan from a big club in Celtic and is unlikely to remain in League Two next season.

Aitchison has been brilliant for Cooper’s team this campaign and has shown on many occasions the reason he is highly-rated at the Scottish champions.

ST: Luke Varney (Cheltenham)

Varney has not had his best season by any stretch of the imagination but has still notched seven goals for the Robins.

He’s struggled with injury problems this season unlike last where he kept himself fit for the majority of the time.

ST: Alfie May (Cheltenham)

May has scored six times since his move from Doncaster Rovers in January and has proved a great signing from Duff.

The 26-year-old is already a fan favourite with his determination and desire evident to see on and off-the-ball.
