Cheltenham Town stayed top of League Two with a dramatic late winner from Andy Williams at Exeter City.
It was a tight game between 1st and 8th, and it took 90 minutes for the Robins to break the deadlock, Williams heading home a long throw.
Wins for Cambridge United and local rivals Forest Green Rovers meant that Michael Duff’s side had dropped to 3rd in the live standings before the goal.
Exeter manager Matt Taylor:
“Look, it’s such a disappointing or heartbreaking way to finish the game, to ultimately lose a game. But we’ve only really lost a point today. Cheltenham have obviously gained two extra points. I don’t think either team deserved to win that game, we matched each other. We had some chances, they had a couple of chances, very much a League Two game of two good quality teams. But that extra little bit of, whether it’s personality or physicality in that last moment from a long throw which is a weapon for them, we just couldn’t quite deal with it.
Our usual top home performances dominate the game, but that was a very even game. When it did land to us, we just didn’t quite have it in us today. We actually had better moments in the middle of the pitch, where we fought, when it was breaking around, but we couldn’t quite get control of the ball. That’s credit to Cheltenham in terms of putting us under pressure, and there were probably a few tired legs out there. I felt some of our performances, certainly in the attacking sense, weren’t quite where they needed to be.
The sun’s shining now but it was hailing 15 minutes ago. We might have had the worst in terms of those conditions, the wind was so strong towards that second half and we got a little bit deep at times because we couldn’t get out in terms of Jocko’s kicking or our clearances.
It was a game that two good teams both would’ve been comfortable with a point, but it was such a sad end for us, conceding that goal.
You’ve got to defend the long throw. We just got a little bit tangled up in terms of position. I watched it back so I know exactly what happened and we just didn’t quite have the clarity of mind in terms of what we needed to do in that moment. That was one poor from us.”
