“Big crowds carry big expectations” – Jose Marquez returns for Forest Green Rovers as they look to do the double on Southend United

Forest Green forward Jose Marquez would “love to be involved” in this weekend’s clash against Southend United at Roots Hall.

Robbie Savage’s side are on their travels this weekend as they visit Southend United hoping to extend the gap between them and outside of the playoff spots.

“It’s a massive game,” Marquez said. “Obviously we are on good form and won the last two games so we hope we can carry that on, I’ve been training well this weekend. It’s an opportunity for me if I’m involved and if I’m not involved then obviously I will be cheering the team on but hopefully I can help the team as much as possible if I am involved and we can get the three points.

“100% I’d love to be involved, it’s the kind of game you look forward to in the season, the games with the big crowds and carry big expectations.”

Marquez has been out injured since November after getting hurt whilst on loan at Dorking after a strong start to the season at Alvechurch.

The 19-year-old was introduced in to the FGR side for their trip to Altrincham and home clash against Rochdale in late-September and early-October before scoring three goals in four for Dorking.

“Dorking was very good, I enjoyed it, it’s a great club and scored a few goals. Obviously not as many minutes as I would have liked because of the injury but it’s a great place and I wish them the best.

“I’ve been out injured with JMT [Jordan Moore-Taylor] and Ryan [Inniss] who are two really experienced players who have had great careers, and they have taken me under their wing. I speak to Doidgey all the time who has had an unbelievable career, you kind of do the same things, same runs so you try and hit the ground running as soon as possible really train well score many goals in training and then taking that into the game.”

Rovers managed to beat Southend earlier in the season when goals from former loanee Harry Whitwell and top scorer Kyle McAllister secured them all three points in a 2-1 victory.

When the game ended there was a bit of pushing and shoving from both sides with a lot of emotion boiled up after the 2024/25 playoff semi final which saw the Shrimpers secure a spot in the Wembley showpiece occasion on penalties.

“It’s been a long period but I’m feeling strong, I’m feeling good. I was back in training for the first time on Tuesday, I’ve got a full session today and hopefully I can build on that.”
