Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff praises ‘excellent’ West Brom loanee Josh Griffiths after Salford City win

Cheltenham Town goalkeeper Josh Griffiths kept his 17th clean sheet of the League Two campaign in the Robins’ 2-0 win over Salford City on Saturday.

On loan from West Bromwich Albion, Griffiths earned a call-up to England’s under-21s squad last week for their forthcoming 2021 UEFA European U21 Championship matches in Slovenia, having become a key component of Cheltenham’s promotion bid this term.

Michael Duff’s side have conceded the second-fewest goals in League Two this season, but while the Cheltenham boss has been content with his side’s resilient displays, there’s plenty of work still to be done.

“I said it the other night, the most frustrating thing is the amount of goals we’ve conceded,” Duff said after watching his side pick up a 10th league win of the campaign at the Jonny-Rocks Stadium at the weekend.

“We have conceded far too many goals, twos and threes, which is a bugbear of mine, but we’ll be trying to keep a few more clean sheets.”

Cheltenham’s 19-year-old goalkeeper has been a mainstay in the team this year, after starting all but one of the Robins’ League Two fixtures so far this campaign.

Earlier in the season, Griffiths was a part of the England under-19s squad which led to him missing Cheltenham’s away victory at Carlisle United. Scott Flinders is poised to deputise in Griffiths’ absence again when Cheltenham travel to Morecambe on Saturday.

“He’s (Flinders) played 500 games and he won’t need any motivation or cajoling,” Duff said.

“I generally leave the goalies to Booky (Steve Book) anyway. He’s a solid citizen in terms of his personality and how he is around the group. He’s been good for Josh too.

“I know he’ll want to be playing, but Josh has been excellent, didn’t do anything wrong today. Probably speaks for himself that he has an England call-up. It’s an opportunity for Scott, so hopefully he can come in, same as everyone else, everyone will be used. Hopefully he can be as good as he was against Carlisle.”
