UOG Varsity 2019: Anticipation building ahead of a huge week of university sport

The University of Gloucestershire vs Worcester University. This only means one thing: Varsity. It starts tomorrow and here are the important dates, times and places for a great fortnight of University sport.

Tuesday 2nd April

Men’s and Women’s Football: Evesham Football Club.

The Men’s football team have won the last two Varsity meetings while the Women’s team lost last year.

It all starts at 5:30pm.

Wednesday 3rd April

Morning session: Women’s Volleyball, Men’s and Women’s Badminton, Table Tennis and Rowing.

The University of Gloucestershire’s rowing club captain, Jade Colton, has a lot of rowing experience. She was picked in the GB team for the Atlantic Challenge in 2018. She is worth keeping an eye on.

The badminton team won their Varsity event last year, whereas Rowing lost.

Afternoon session: Dance, Netball, Men’s Basketball and Men’s Futsal.

Dance and Netball both won last year while the Men’s Futsal team lost 8-3 and the Basketball team lost 77-49.

A player to watch for Netball is Shona O’Dwyer. She plays for the Severn Stars who compete in the Netball Super League. She has also represented Wales at under 21 level.

Thursday 4th April

Men’s Cricket: Cheltenham Cricket Club. 11am start.

There are three freshers in the starting XI this year and they will be worth keeping an eye on especially in their first Varsity. These are: Ben Parker, Luke Haider and Lachlan Beggs.

The cricket team will be looking for revenge after losing their Varsity event last year.

Friday 5th April

Golf: Lilley Brook Golf Club. 11:30am start.

Swimming: Leisure @ Cheltenham. 6:30pm start.

Men: Swim Captain, Harry Wellington is a butterfly swimmer. His races include the 50 metres and 100 metres sprints. He also competes at Para-national level.

Women: Sophie Hall is a freestyle swimmer who is her second year at the University. She can compete in all distances being able to do the sprint distances and the long distances.

Athletics: Prince of Wales Stadium. 6:30pm start.

All three of these teams won their events last year.

Saturday 6th April

Women’s Hockey: St Peter’s College. 2pm start.

Women’s Hockey Fresher, Hannah Johnson is a strong defensive player, who has slotted in well with the first team. She has put in many solid performances this season. She will certainly be one to watch during this Varsity and for the future.

Men’s Hockey: St Peter’s College. 4pm start.

Both hockey teams won their matches last year and Men’s hockey will be looking to make it 17 wins in a row against Worcester.

Sunday 7th April

American Football: The Folley. 1pm start.

Last year, The Gloucestershire Gladiators swept Worcester away in 52-0 thrashing.

Monday 8th April

Tennis: Oxstalls Tennis Centre: 10am start.

Trampolining: Oxstalls Sports Studio. 5:15pm start.

Both Tennis and Trampolining teams won their respective events last year and will be hoping for a similar result this year.

Tuesday 9th April

Equestrian: Cotswold Riding School. 10am start.

The Equestrian team won Team Glos’ first point of Varsity 2018.

Climbing: The Warehouse Gloucester. 1pm start.

The Climbing team suffered defeat last year in a close encounter.

Cheerleading: GL1 Gloucester. 8pm start.

The Cheerleading team will be hoping to make up the difference that denied them victory in last years Varsity. They lost by 0.7 of a point and will want to win after being so close.

Wednesday 10th April

Men’s and Women’s Rugby: Mosley Rugby Club.

The women’s team lost last year, but the Men’s team won which gave us the overall victory for Varsity in 2018.

The action starts at 1pm.
