The University of Gloucestershire Men’s Hockey team go into their Christmas break eight points clear at the top of their league. The side are just over half way through their league campaign having played six games and being victorious in all of them, scoring a staggering 40 goals along the way.
The hockey team managed to earn their eight point lead with a very hard fought away win at Cardiff Met last week in which UoG walked away 4-3 winners.
The club’s first team captain, Rich Owen said after the game, “I think this has easily been our best win of the year so far! Every single one of us gave everything out on that pitch to earn the win today and I couldn’t have asked anymore from the team. It was obvious Cardiff were desperate to get something out of the game as they chucked absolutely everything at us! I mean they took off their goalkeeper in the last 10 minutes and played with 11 outfield! That just shows the amount of pressure we had to withstand. They really didn’t want us to get that 8 point gap but in the end I think we were the better team and the result shows that.”
Cardiff Met are currently second in the league, but eight points difference with only 4 games left, it would appear that the league is now Gloucester’s to loose. Rich Owen commented, “We’ve put ourselves into a very strong position and that wasn’t just by chance, we’ve all earned it. The league is in our own hands and that’s exactly where I wanted to be. I knew at the start of the season that we had a strong team, having picked up some very strong players this year but Im still surprised at how good we’ve been at times this season.”
UoG Men’s Hockey are also the only team at the University who can boast a 100 per cent record across all competitions, having won all of their league games so far and being in the quarter final of the Cup where they face Exeter 6ths on the 14th of February.
