This Wednesday the University of Gloucestershire’s Golf team will look to take the first step in retaining the Western Conference Cup that they won in April of this year.
UoG Golf will make the journey to South Wales to face Swansea 2nd team at Pennard Golf Club in their opening cup fixture of the 17/18 season.
The team led by Captain Nathan Watts have started their league campaign very strongly having lost only one of their opening six matches. This rich vein of form has them currently positioned second in the league table, behind only Bournemouth who continue to be a tough rival for UoG. In their last league fixture UoG Golf, despite having to field a somewhat makeshift team UoG managed to get the win against a tough Bristol side, so will be taking some positive vibes in to their opening round of the Western Conference Cup.
The fixture against Swansea has proven to be a good opportunity for Nathan Watts to be a bit more creative with his team selection with the inclusion of Toby Mellett, who will be making only his second appearance for UoG Golf and his first in the Cup. In other team news, Tom Skinner returns to the team after missing the previous fixture, Anton Hotham has secured his spot in the team and will be looking to get his first win of the season, meanwhile Tom Hage and Paul Wood keep their places to make up the team of six.
ParkLife Sport Reporter Gavin Barrett went down to Lilleybrook Golf Club where UoG Golf train and play their home matches to cast an eye over preparations and get some thoughts ahead of this important Cup fixture. See Gavin’s feature below.
UoG Golf will be teeing off in Swansea at 11am on Wednesday and will face Bournemouth in the second round should they seal victory.
