OPINION: The European Golden Boot: Who Wins It?

We are approaching the business end of the season and there are five players still in the running for the Golden Boot. Here is who I think will win the award and why?

Five players are all tied on 24 goals, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, PSG’s Edinson Cavani, Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane and Lazio’s Ciro Immobile. All players are in fine form and are all very much within a decent shout of winning the coveted prize.

Harry Kane picked up an injury against Bournemouth on the weekend. He is yet to have a scan on his ankle after he clashed with Asmir Begovic, it’s not yet known how this injury will impact him. This could give him a disadvantage in the pursuit of the award. One should probably look elsewhere for their winner.

Ciro Immobile has been on fire for Lazio this season, he had a failed spell at Borussia Dortmund but has refound his form at Lazio and has scored 34 in 36 games. In a league where defending is historically very good, it shows how good the Italian striker has been and could be a good outside shot for the award.

Edinson Cavani has been in prolific form, the arrival of Neymar made people think that the Uruguayan would be pushed out of the side, but he fought back and looks better than ever. The Parisian fans love him and he is now their all-time record scorer. The former Napoli man overtook Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic on 156 goals for the PSG. In a domestic league where PSG brush teams aside, one couldn’t rule out the big man up top.

Mohamed Salah has been a revelation since signing for Liverpool from AS Roma. He has played a huge part in the Merseyside club’s hugely successful front three this season and could be someone who is a prime candidate for the winner. Could we see Liverpool’s crowning jewel win the award? One couldn’t bet against him.

Finally, Barcelona’s Lionel Messi. What hasn’t already been said about this magician? He is someone who isn’t just goals, his game is much more complete than that. Once could never bet against Barcelona’s number ten and why should they? He is on fire and one could expect him to pick up the award when the season ends.

There isn’t long left of the season and all of these players are level pegging in the race for the golden boot. If one is looking for a player to put money on, you can’t look past Lionel Messi. However, with that said both Salah and Cavani could pip the Argentinian to the award.
