The sad and unfortunate downfall of cash-strapped Welsh club Merthyr Town makes for grim reading following their 13-1 defeat away at Chesham United.
It’s not every day you come across a scoreline of that magnitude, even if the difficult circumstances were substantial in producing such a remarkable result.
Although a Gloucestershire based side hasn’t lost by a similar margin in decades, they’ve still suffered some heavy defeats nonetheless.
We at Park Life Sport decided to take a look at some of the previous occasions this has happened.
Cheltenham Town 1-10 Merthyr Tydfil: Southern League, 8th March 1952.
Despite it being the Welsh club on the end of a humiliating defeat this weekend, some 65 years-ago they put TEN past Cheltenham Town in what still stands as their heaviest ever defeat to date.
Forest Green Rovers 0–10 Gloucester: Mid-Gloucestershire League, 13 January 1900.
Unlike Cheltenham, Forest Green Rovers failed to score a single goal when they were comfortably beaten by Gloucester. Ten goals without reply emphasising the enormity of such a defeat.
Gloucester City 0-14 Brimscombe FC: Gloucestershire League West, January 1923.
Step Forward Gloucester City. Although they inflicted a ten-goal beating on Forest Green 117 years-ago, they too have been on the receiving end of an embarrassing defeat that has yet to have been matched.
94 years-ago they suffered an embarrassing 14-0 home defeat to Brimscombe FC in the biggest defeat a Gloucestershire club has ever received. FOURTEEN goals conceded and not a single one scored emphasising that results like these do come along in football from time-to-time.
All in all that makes for an aggregate scoreline of 34-1. Ouch.
