Sky Bet Championship round-up

Today saw 11 Sky Bet Championship fixtures take place in what was another enthralling weekend of footballing action in England’s second-tier.

The final match of the weekend sees Nottingham Forest host Derby County in the East-Midlands derby as the ‘derby-day weekend’ reaches its climax.

With just ten league fixtures left of this campaign, the race for promotion to the Premier League is heating up whilst the battle to avoid the drop looks to be going to the wire.

In the biggest result of the day, the late kick-off saw Aston Villa beat Wolves 4-1 at Villa Park. Goals from Albert Adomah, James Chester, Lewis Grabban, and Birkir Bjarnason sealed the points for Steve Bruce’s side.

High-flying Fulham won 2-1 at Preston courtesy of a late winner from Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian netting his sixth goal in just five games since joining the Cottagers on-loan from Newcastle in January.

Fellow promotion-chasers Cardiff City beat Birmingham 3-2 at the Cardiff City Stadium as they made it ten-matches unbeaten and closed the gap between them and league-leaders Wolves to just three points.

In the race for the playoffs, Tony Pulis’ Middlesbrough ran out 3-1 winners against Barnsley at the Riverside. whilst Bristol City and Sheffield United drew 0-0 at Burton Albion and Ipswich Town respectively.

In the fight for survival, Bottom-club Sunderland narrowly lost 1-0 at Queens Park Rangers despite playing the majority of the second-half with ten men as they had goalkeeper Luke Steele sent-off.

Fellow strugglers Sheffield Wednesday and Bolton Wanderers shared the points at Hillsborough in a 1-1 draw as a 93rd-minute goal from Aaron Wilbraham cancelled out George Boyd’s opener.

Despite James Maddison netting his first career hat-trick for Norwich City, The Canaries were beaten 4-3 by Hull in a seven-goal thriller at the KCOM Stadium.

George Saville scored inside the opening 30 seconds as Millwall edged past Brentford 1-0 at the Den whilst Reading and Leeds played out a 2-2 draw at the Madejski Stadium.
