REPORT: 10 man Cheltenham Town beaten 1-0 by Play-off chasing Newport County

Cheltenham Town have lost 1-0 to Newport County AFC at Rodney Parade in Sky Bet League Two

An own goal from Chris Hussey was the only goal on a rainy evening in South Wales

Cheltenham were reduced to 10 men when defender Will Boyle was sent off for a foul on Newport’s Jamille Matt

the win keeps Newport’s play off hopes alive, as the Robins stay 17th in the table.

Newport started the brighter of the two sides, finding space on the wings in Cheltenham’s final third.

Newport came into the game knowing a win would keep their play-off chances alive, as the game got underway they  were 13th in Sky Bet League Two.

Cheltenham’s best chance of the first half came from some good play on the left-hand side. Luke Varney picking out Chris Hussey on the wing, his cross was inches away from the stretching leg of Chris Clements, but the midfielder couldn’t quite reach it.

David Pipe came on for the hosts at half time and immediately started to cause problems on the right-hand side, crossing towards Amond, but the ball in was well dealt with by the Robins back line.

With the noisy home faithful behind them, Newport were starting to find their way into the game.

Newport started the second half the better of the two sides, their first attempt at goal saw them take the lead, a looping effort from Padraig Amond beat Scott Flinders and was headed in by Chris Hussey going down as a Cheltenham own goal.

Cheltenham came back with a chance of their own, against the run of play Kevin Dawson found Billy Waters in on goal, his strike went out for a Robins corner.

From the resulting set piece Newport counter attacked forcing Scott Flinders into action, he rushed at the feet of Jamille Matt to deny what should’ve been a second Newport goal.

Jamille that was then through again before being brought down by Cheltenham defender Will Boyle, the Robins centre back saw red for the challenge, leaving Cheltenham with 10 men for the last 15 minutes.

Jordan Tillson had the chance to equalise late on for the Robins, but his headed effort from a Chris Hussey corner went over the bar.
