PREVIEW: Wolves Under-23s vs Southampton Under-23s

Second-placed Wolves Under-23s take on Southampton Under-23s in a top of the table clash in the Premier League 2 Division two.

Radhi Jaïdi’s side are currently two points clear of Rob Edwards’ team, however the Birmingham side do have a game in hand over the Saints.

Thomas O’Connor scored the late winner in the reverse fixture earlier this season, where the South Coast side came out 3-2 winners at St Mary’s.

A victory for the Midlands team will see them go one point clear at the top of the table, whereas Southampton could go five points clear if they win tonight.

Edwards’ side have won one out of their last three games in all competitions compared to the Saints have won two from three.

Manager Jaïdi is expecting a tough game from Wolves tonight saying: “It won’t be a surprise with Wolves given the quality they have collectively and individually.”

The Saints coach also expressed his side is extremely confident but wants to make sure that they keep their focus in tonight’s match: “There is a big level of confidence as it stands with the players,” he said.

“For me it’s important to control that confidence and focus on what we’ve been doing to put our self in this position.”

Edwards spoke to the Wolves website ahead of the game where he was full of praise for the opposition: “Southampton are currently top of the division and are performing very well.

“They’re playing well, winning games, but we’re looking forwards to the challenge.”

With so much at stake for Southampton, Jaïdi could look to first team players would are still eligible for U23s action.

Defenders Callum Slattery and Matt Targett are both potential players who could be recalled and were both in Southampton’s squad against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

Josh Sims has also been involved with Jaïdi’s side in recent weeks, but after an impressive 45 minutes against Spurs on Saturday, it’s unlikely he will feature in tonight’s match.
