PREVIEW – Tuesday’s tips for the Cheltenham Festival

It’s the start of the Cheltenham Festival today and with many exciting races and the potential for testing conditions with the going being heavy to soft, we take a look at the horses with the best chances of coming up trumps and leaving the racecourse as victors.

SKY BET SUPREME NOVICES HURDLE (13:30)

The festival opens with the Supreme Novices Hurdle, covering a very open field with lots of potential winners, the current favourite is Getabird at 2/1.  He comes in as the main tip for this race having had an unbeaten start to his career.

This would be the first top level success, but most are confident he can perform on the big stage. As for an each way bet some like the look of Claimantakinforgan. This he horse has finished in the top three in all of his races and with the testing conditions, it looks like an interesting shout.

ARKLE CHALLENGE (14:10)

The second race of the day is the Arkle Challenge with Footpad the clear favourite at 10/11. Rode by jockey Ruby Walsh, he will only have to contest with five other horses. As for an each way bet, Saint Calvados is a good pick, second in the betting odds at 3/1, it’s likely he’ll secure a top three finish.

ULTIMA HANDICAP CHASE (14:50)

This one contains an abundance of talented horses and should make for a great spectacle. Singlefarmpayment has something to prove after the handicapper seems to have exposed him in recent times. In terms of an each way bet, O O Seven and Shantou Flyer look like intriguing shouts with Seven’s consistency and Flyer’s point to prove as he looks to end a 14-month winless drought.

CHAMPION HURDLE (15:30)

Despite his love affair with the Cheltenham Festival, Faugheen’s form may prove costly as rival horse Buveur D’Air remains the favourite amongst the bookies at the short odds of 8/13. Faugheen, possibly along with Wicklow Brave could be an each way flutter to look at.

MARES HURDLE (16:10)

Apple’s Jade has been touted by many as a “fantastic mare” and is running exceptionally well in the big races. She does also bear some high-stakes potential and is yet to fully reach the heights expected of her. The outside shout in this particular case, suggests La Bague Au Roi as one to watch out for.
