Natwest Six Nation’s Wales vs Ireland head to heads

Wales vs Ireland has always been a very physical affair and Ireland will have the edge heading into Saturday’s match at the Aviva stadium. They have won both of their opening fixtures against France and Italy whilst Wales have beaten Scotland but just fell short against England.

Historically, looking back over the past five years the sides are fairly even with one draw and two wins apiece between them. We’ve taken a look back at some highlights from these fixtures.

2017: Wales 22-9 Ireland

Wales won the last meeting between the two nations as George North scored a double and Jamie Roberts sealed the victory. Ireland’s Johnny Sexton was sin-binned for a professional foul and Ireland couldn’t seem to recover from the two early tries.

2016: Ireland 16-16 Wales

An interesting game that ended all square at the Aviva Stadium. In a world of “what if” Dan Biggar could have sealed the victory for Wales but missed their first penalty of the game resulting in a level scoreline. The game was tight the whole way through with Ireland leading by just 3 points at halftime. Wales put most of the points on the board in the second half but Ireland pulled it level through a penalty and the tense affair ended with the scores level.

2015: Wales 23-16 Ireland

Leigh Halfpenny was Wales’ talisman in this fixture scoring 15 of their 23 points. Ireland were 15-0 down by the 15th minute but began to find their rhythm, but couldn’t recover from conceding early on. Once Ireland sorted their discipline problems they began to get a hold of the game scoring through a penalty try and bringing the deficit to four points but due to the early lead built up by Wales, Ireland were always playing catch up.

2014: Ireland 26-3 Wales

Ireland ran circles around Wales at the Aviva stadium in 2014. After giving away two early penalties, Ireland built on their lead and went into the break having conceded no points. With a 13 point lead and no sign of advance from the Welsh, the Irish continued there form into the second half and left Waled in the dust winning by 23 points.

2013: Wales 22-30 Ireland

After three straight losses to Wales in the years prior, Ireland would have savoured this victory. Ireland went into the break leading 23-3 and although Wales began to break through the Irish defence, the Irish held on and kept the good discipline in the dying minutes of the game to secure the victory.
