The First Round of the FA Cup begins this weekend, and Forest Green Rovers begin their campaign away to League One side Oxford United, with £36,000 on offer to the winners.
Mark Cooper’s side travel to the Kassam Stadium, and will hope to see their name in Monday’s Second Round draw.
We’ve already been through Cheltenham Town’s last five FA Cup campaigns, and now Parklife Sport takes a look at Rovers’ last five seasons in the FA Cup.
2017/18 – Second Round
Last season, Forest Green reached the Second Round of the competition, as they began their journey in the First Round for the first time.
Christian Doidge scored the game’s only goal as Cooper’s side defeated Macclesfield Town 1-0 at home. They then hosted Exeter City in the Second Round, and played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at The New Lawn, with Doidge netting a brace, as well as a Scott Laird goal. Jayden Stockley scored in the 94th minute to force a replay.
In the replay at St James Park, Stockley scored in the 115th minute as the Grecians were 2-1 winners.
2016/17 – Fourth Qualifying Round
Similarly to their Gloucestershire rivals Cheltenham, Forest Green were also defeated by Sutton United in the 2016/17 season.
After Forest Green took the lead through Liam Noble, Sutton equalised through Ross Stearn. Roarie Deacon was the hero in this round, as he netted a last minute winner to send The U’s into the First Round.
Sutton met Cheltenham in the next round, with Deacon scoring another late winner to send the Robins out.
2015/16 – Second Round
Rovers enjoyed a good run in the FA Cup during the 2015/16 season, reaching the Second Round.
A 2-1 win over Margate in the Fourth Qualifying Round started the campaign. In the First Round, Elliott Frear scored a 93rd minute winner as Forest Green defeated League One side AFC Wimbledon 2-1, after an earlier goal from Darren Carter.
However, their journey would end at the hands of Saturday’s opposition. Kemar Roofe bagged a 76th minute winner, as Ady Pennock’s side couldn’t beat the then-League Two side.
2014/15 – First Round
The 2014/15 season saw Rovers depart the competition to opposition in the Football League again.
Luke Rodgers, Jon Parkin, and a James Norwood double meant Rovers were 4-1 winners over country-rivals Gloucester City. They were rewarded with a home tie to League One side Scunthorpe United.
Gary McSheffrey scored twice to send the Iron into the Second Round.
2013/14 – Fourth Qualifying Round
Five years ago, Rovers suffered one of their worst FA Cup campaigns in recent memory.
Hosting Isthmian League side Bishop’s Stortford at The New Lawn, Forest Green were defeated 1-0 by the Blues.
Reece Prestedge scored the only goal of the game, as Bishop’s Stortford claimed a valuable scalp in the FA Cup.
Some good FA Cup campaigns in recent seasons for Forest Green. Cooper’s side will hope to get beyond the First Round with a win over Karl Robinson’s Oxford side on Saturday. You can choose your favourite Forest Green memory in the FA Cup on our Twitter account @Parklife_Sport.
