Cheltenham Town begin their FA Cup journey this weekend. Michael Duff’s side are in action on Saturday, as they travel to non-league side Ebbsfleet United for their First Round tie.
The Robins travel to Stonebridge Road, as they aim to reach the Second Round of the competition. But how have they fared in the competition in the last few seasons?
Parklife Sport takes a look back at Cheltenham’s last five FA Cup campaigns.
2017/18 – First Round
Last season, the Robins’ journey in the competition was over after one game.
Hosting Vanarama National side Maidstone United at Whaddon Road, Cheltenham finished as 4-2 losers to the Stones. Delano Sam-Yorke, Joe Piggot, and Zavon Hines struck to give the away side a 3-0 lead, before Kevin Dawson pulled a goal back for the Robins. Sam-Yorke added his second and Maidstone’s fourth before being sent off, as Alex Finney’s own goal made it 4-2.
Dawson also saw red in the final ten minutes, as Cheltenham exited the FA Cup in miserable fashion.
2016/17 – Second Round
The last time Cheltenham got beyond the first round was 2016/17, when they were defeated by non-league opposition yet again, in the form of Sutton United.
After beating Crewe Alexandra in their First Round replay, they were given a trip to Gander Green Lane to play Sutton. Cheltenham did take the lead through Danny Wright, before Matt Tubbs equalised for the non-league side moments into the second half.
Gary Johnson’s side suffered heartbreak in the dying the seconds of the game, as Roarie Deacon’s 96th minute winner sent Sutton into the Third Round.
2015/16 – First Round
As the club were in the Vanarama National during the 2015/16 season, the Robins began their FA Cup campaign in the Fourth Qualifying Round.
They drew 3-3 away to Havant and Waterlooville, before defeating the Hawks 1-0 at Whaddon Road through Wright. For their victory, they were rewarded with an away trip to then-League Two side Hartlepool United.
Kudus Oyenuga scored the game’s only goal, as Pools booked a place in the Second Round.
2014/15 – Second Round
The 2014/15 season saw Cheltenham exit the competition at the hands of non-league opposition again, as Dover Athletic were 1-0 winners over the Robins.
Byron Harrison hit a hat-trick as Cheltenham were 5-0 winners over Swindon Town in the First Round, with Terry Gornell and Matt Richards also scoring in an emphatic win for the side.
In the Second Round, Connor Essam netted an 83rd minute winner for Dover to knock the Robins out of the competition.
2013/14 – First Round
Five years ago, Cheltenham were defeated by a non-league side in the FA Cup once again.
Nick Chadwick scored in the 20th minute, as Tamworth were 1-0 winners over the Robins. Mark Yates’ side struggled to find a way beyond the then-Conference Premier side.
Not particularly good reading for Cheltenham fans, as they have exited the FA Cup to non-league opposition in four out of the last five years. Duff’s side will want to end the trend on Saturday with a victory over Ebbsfleet. You can choose your favourite FA Cup memory for Cheltenham Town on our Twitter page @Parklife_Sport.
