Western Storm’s Heather Knight was out for six as England suffered a final over defeat in their T20 World Cup opener against South Africa.
Captain Knight found it difficult to get to grips with the Perth pitch as England set their opponents 124 to win, mainly thanks to Nat Sciver’s 50.
Anya Shrubsole got England off to a good start during South Africa’s innings, taking to wicket of Lizzelle Lee, but captain Dane van Niekerk and Marizanne Kapp put South Africa within touching distance.
Knight holds the 2019 KSL trophy, the final running of the league
Mignon du Preez finished the game in the final over, leaving England with zero points.
Top scorer Sciver told Sky Sports that the team need to settle into the tournament: “We’ve got a couple of games in Canberra to hopefully get used to the wicket. Hopefully we can go out there and play positively and play with freedom.
“Sometimes in the first game you have a few nerves around – I was nervous since two days ago, watching the first game, so yeah, nerves can be good, but they can also be bad sometimes.”
They play underdogs Thailand in their next game, set to take place at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Wednesday at 4am UK time.
