All Golds head coach Lee Greenwood insists he is happy with his 27-man squad but may add to it if he can find the right type of player.
The rugby league season doesn’t begin until late February but the All Golds will be playing pre-season friendlies throughout January and Greenwood says he’s always on the look-out for new players.
“We work hard on player recruitment,” said Greenwood. It’s not just a case of signing players for the sake of it – they need to have the right mentality. In the past we’ve maybe not done enough homework on players we’ve signed. If the right player comes up we’ll act but they need to be in positions we are short in.
“The two-day army camp last weekend was a great success. It was good to get everyone together and introduce the new players to the rest of the squad. We had a good training session on Thursday night and a great day out at the races on Saturday.
“There’s a good feeling amongst the squad which I’m hoping will translate to our performances on the field. We’ve got a warm weather camp in Malta planned for early February as well, that will be something to look forward to. The more time us coaches have with the players the better.”
Greenwood praised the work done by his assistant coaches Anthony Murray and Dan Poulton ahead of the new campaign. “Muzza and Poults are two really good additions to the coaching team. What Muzza did at North Wales was fantastic and he’s just the type of person we want at our club – he’s hungry for success and is good with the players. Dan is a young, ambitious coach who wants to work his way up the leagues. I get on well with them both and really looking forward to the new season.
“We’re under no illusions as to the task ahead of us. It’s going to be a tough season but if we continue the good form we showed towards the end of last season we’ll be confident of giving the fans something to cheer about.”
