Gloucestershire’s Bancroft stars as Australia take 1-0 Ashes lead

Gloucestershire Cricket batsman Cameron Bancroft starred on his international debut as Australia claimed the first Ashes Test match over England.

Bancroft was comfortably able to better his tally from the first innings, scoring 82 runs in the second innings, working in great tandem with his batting partner David Warner to reach 173-0, meaning the Aussies took the contest by 10 wickets.

The session saw Bancroft – nicknamed ‘Bangers’ – hit ten 4s and a superb six off 182 balls, dealing expertly with England’s top bowlers and managing to average a strike rate of 45.02 for the innings.

The right-handed batsmen has also been at the centre of reports that he and England wicket keeper Jonny Bairstow had a bust-up whilst on a night out in Perth in October. The Gloucestershire club are yet to comment on the matter, instead allowing Bancroft himself to answer questions regarding the incident following Australia’s triumph on Monday.

The 25-year-old, speaking in his post-match press conference this morning, described the altercation as “really weird” although believes there was “nothing malicious” in it and has since laughed off any concerns over the Englishman’s behaviour.

The ECB have confirmed they will be looking into the ‘headbutt’ claims and may take disciplinary action if the incident is deemed to have been an act of violence.

The second Test is set to commence on Saturday 2nd December, with Bancroft once again the favourite to lead the Australian batting line-up.
