Gloucestershire defeat Kent in opening day clash

Gloucestershire County Cricket claimed their first victory of the season this morning as they saw off Kent by five wickets in a what was a strikingly low scoring affair in Canterbury.

This marks not only the opening win of the season but also the first under newly appointed captain Chris Dent. The 27-year-old took over the reigns from wicket keeper Phil Mustard who recently departed following a second spell at the club.

Gloucestershire came into the final day needing just 47 runs from the second innings and a superb contribution of 52 runs-not out from all-rounder Benny Howell put them well on their way along with Gareth Roderick’s return of 26.

Captain Dent was bowled out just ten minutes into his call on the crease picking up six runs off 11 balls. Nonetheless, the result helps Gloucestershire get off to a positive start as the only other game of the weekend saw Middlesex beat Northamptonshire in what was also a fairly low scoring encounter.

Gloucestershire’s next County Championship fixture sees them host Welsh opponents Glamorgan on Friday morning as Richard Dawson’s side look to secure back-to-back victories and take maximum points from their opening two games.
