Gloucester Rugby Academy lead England to win

Five Gloucester Rugby Academy players star as England Under 18’s prepare for next month’s Six Nations festival with a six-try win over Scotland.

England scored six tries in the 36-21 win, that saw starts for
Louis Hillman-Copper (Cheltenham College), Harry Fry (Hartpury College), Jenson Boughton (Hartpury College), Archie Benson (Dean Close School) and Josh Gray (Dean Close School).

Pathway performance coach, Jim Mallinder, was full of positive words after the game.

“We’ve very pleased with that performance,” said Mallinder.

“This was a new side coming together, their first game of the year and we played well against a spirited Scotland side who were very competitive at the breakdown and made it difficult for us.

“Our shape was good, as was the continuity of our play and this shows that we’ve got some good players who can play an exciting brand of rugby which is what we want, but also that we have variety in our game as shown today.

“Our set piece was strong which is also pleasing, our breakdown is an area we need to look at and we never like to concede tries so there is work to do.”

The game was played at Billingham RUFC ahead of the start of the Under 18 Six Nations festival next month, which is to be played over 10 days, starting on April 13th against Wales.

England have one more warm-up game before the tournament starts, which is this weekend at Cheshunt RFC against the French.

Hartpury is the home for the second ever Under 18s Six Nations Festival, where all six nations play three matches each over a 10 day period. England will play Wales at Hatpury’s Gillman’s Ground, Ireland at Sixways on Wednesday 17th April and then they finish their campaign at Kingsholm on the 21st.

England lost all three games in the inaugural competition last year, which was won by yesterday’s opponents, Scotland, so the chances of success this year look promising.
