Gloucester announce team to face Leicester for opening fixture in 2019 Premiership Shield

Gloucester United have announced their team to face Leicester Tigers A in the opening match of the 2019/20 Premiership Shield Northern Conference League.

Gloucester’s line-up includes players who have previously played in the Gallagher Premiership and Premiership Cup including Tom Hudson.

The Cherry and Whites also bring in a number of academy players for this Monday night fixture, including fly-half George Barton who was part of England U18’s line-up in March.

Leicester Tigers travel to Kingsholm with a similar strength team. Six of the starting 15 have played first team action for Leicester in 2019. Three of the Tigers’ replacements are on loan from clubs in Leicestershire.

Why are Gloucester playing in the Northern Conference?

Usually, Gloucester come up against the likes of Bristol, Bath and Exeter in the Premiership Shield but they’ll face the likes of Sale Jets, Wasps and Leicester this season.

With Newcastle Falcons being relegated from the Gallagher Premiership at the end of the 2018/19 season, they lost their place in the competition. To ensure each conference has six teams, Gloucester moved into the Northern Division as they were the team located furthest north in the Southern League.

As normal, after the teams have played each other home and away the top two from each group will play in the semi-finals.

Tickets for tonight’s match cost £5 while children cost £1. The match is included on season tickets. Kick off is at 7.30pm.
