Forest Green’s Potential Play-Off Opponents

Heading into the final game of the season, Forest Green are guaranteed a play-off spot and their hunt for promotion will continue for at least another two matches.

Their final position is yet to be confirmed and the Green Devils can still finish anywhere between fourth and sixth, and face any one of nine teams in the play-off semi-final.

Mark Cooper will be hoping to end up in fourth or fifth come Saturday evening, with the two teams ending in those spots playing the second-leg at home in front of the Rovers fans.

Forest Green Rovers’ last play-off campaign was just two seasons ago, when they beat potential semi-final opponents Tranmere in the National League final at Wembley to win promotion to the EFL.

But who could they be facing over two legs in this season’s play-off campaign?

Current Position: 2nd

Remaining Fixture(s): Tranmere (A), Port Vale (H)

Key Man: Jay O’Shea

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 16/1

Verdict: With two games remaining, Bury will be confident they can pick up the three points they need to secure automatic promotion. It looks highly unlikely that Bury will be Forest Green’s play-off opponents.

Mansfield Town

Current Position: 3rd

Remaining Fixture(s): MK Dons (A)

Key Man: Krystian Pearce

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 10/11

Verdict: Mansfield have a huge game against 4th-placed MK Dons on the final game of the season, but David Flitcroft will know that a win or draw will secure automatic promotion for his side. Their away form hasn’t been great recently but, even if they do end up finishing 4th, it looks more likely that they’d come up against Rovers in the play-off final.

MK Dons

Current Position: 4th

Remaining Fixture(s): Mansfield (H)

Key Man: Kieran Agard

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 8/13

Verdict: In the same position as Mansfield but, with home advantage, they’d fancy themselves to secure that final play-off spot.

MK Dons vs Mansfield on the final day WILL be huge— Not The Top 20 Pod (@NTT20Pod) 20 April 2019

Current Position: 6th

Remaining Fixture(s): Bury (H), Crawley (A)

Key Man: James Norwood

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 1/16

Verdict: The odds imply that Tranmere look nailed on for a play-off spot and look most likely to be FGR’s opponents in the play-off semi-final. A win in both their remaining games would guarantee a finish above the side that beat them in that National League play-off final.

Exeter City

Current Position: 7th

Remaining Fixture(s): Forest Green (A)

Key Man: Christy Pym

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 13/8

Verdict: They’re currently relying on Newport not picking up maximum points from their remaining two games but, if Newport fail to win during the week against Oldham, they’ll know a win against Forest Green on the final day would secure them that final play-off spot.

Colchester United

Current Position: 8th

Remaining Fixture(s): Lincoln (A)

Key Man: Sammie Szmodics

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 7/1

Verdict: Again relying on other results, Colchester need Exeter to fail to win their final game and Newport to only pick up a maximum of three points from their last two games. However, they would also need to beat League Two champions Lincoln on the final day, which will be a tough task.

Carlisle United

Current Position: 9th

Remaining Fixture(s): Yeovil (A)

Key Man: Nathan Thomas

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 7/1

Verdict: Facing already relegated Yeovil on the final day will be a boost for Carlisle in the play-off hunt but, like Colchester, need Newport and Exeter to drop points. They’d also need Colchester to fail to win because what is likely to be an inferior goal difference.

Current Position: 10th

Remaining Fixture(s): Cheltenham (H)

Key Man: Ilias Chair

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 12/1

Verdict: The bookies clearly don’t fancy Dino Maamria’s Stevenage to finish in the play-off spots, pricing them at a huge 12/1 to make the top seven. They’d need all of Newport, Exeter, Colchester and Carlise to drop points and to win their final game against Cheltenham due to their poor goal difference.

Looking forward to this weekend as it will be another big weekend of football.just hope that stevenage get into playoffs as that would be fantastic achievement— jason jefferies (@borojason) 29 April 2019

Newport County

Current Position: 11th

Remaining Fixture(s): Oldham (H), Morecambe (A)

Key Man: Padraig Amond

Odds To Finish in Play-Offs: 10/11

Verdict: Despite currently being in 11th, FA Cup giantkillers Newport are favourites to take that final play-off place because of the advantage of having an extra game between now and the end of the season. They face Oldham and Morecambe – who both now have nothing to play for – and winning both will see them take 7th. A win and a draw would be enough, assuming Exeter don’t beat Forest Green.
