Forest Green Rovers are in FA Cup first round action this weekend as they host high-flying National League side Macclesfield Town at the New Lawn.
Mark Cooper and his side go into the tie on the back of three straight wins against Coventry, Stevenage and Morecambe on Saturday. A run that has seen Rovers climb from the foot of the table and out of the relegation places to 20th.
The green Devils face a Macclesfield side looking to earn promotion back to League Two for the first time since 2012. The Silkmen currently sit second in the National League and just six place behind Forest Green in the English football pyramid.
Macclesfield come to the Cotswold’s having lost their last two games at home to Eastleigh and away to Dagenham and Redbridge. However, they are just one point behind Dover Athletic who currently lead the way at the top of the National League.
It’s nearly 16 years since the two sides last met in the FA Cup, this also came courtesy of the first round of the competition.
A 2-2 draw between the sides at Macclesfield’s Moss Rose stadium meant that the tie would go to a replay 11 days later.
Goals from current Forest Green manager Mark Cooper and the Silkmen’s Kevin Keen meant the match ended 1-1 and forced extra time and penalties.
However it would be Macclesfield who would prevail as Rovers Kevin Langan’s missed penalty meant that away side went into the second round of the competition on penalties by the scoreline of 11-10.
