It’s been ten days since the thrilling 2nd round tie between these two. Last time it finished 3-3, with three goals coming inside the final ten minutes.
Forest Green Rovers travel to St James Park to take on Exeter City. It is the first of two ties between the teams to take place in December. They will meet again on Boxing day.
When they met in the first leg, it was 2-1 to Exeter with ten minutes to go. Scott Laird scored to put the visitors level but Rovers’ Christian Doidge scored in the 92nd minute which appeared to be enough for the home side.
Exeter came back again and equalised in the 94th minute to force both sides into a replay. Jayden Stockley scored the last gasp goal for the Reds.
The winner of the tie will host Premier League side West Bromwich Albion in the third round, which will give either of the league two sides a much needed cash injection.
Rovers will be without, Jack Fitzwater after his red card against Grimsby Town.
FGR boss Mark Cooper looked ahead to the game:
“It’s a money-making tie. The winner gets a shot at a Premier League club.
“We’ll go there and give it a real good go.”
Exeter rested players during their 3-1 loss against Colchester United. This suggests that they have one eye on the tie in midweek.
“Exeter rested players today and that’s what it means to them.”
FGR fans could be disappointed to see their boss say this, as they could see it as him saying it doesn’t mean a lot to him.
He could be prioritising the league over the cups, with Forest Green sitting in 23rd.
FGR will be hoping to put a spell of miserable league form behind them as they try and set up a tie with West Bromwich Albion.
