Derby day delight for Cheltenham Town Ladies

Cheltenham Town Ladies edged past rivals Forest Green Ladies 1-0 in the GFA Women’s Trophy second round at Whaddon Road.

This was caretaker manager Andy Liddle’s first match in charge of the club since taking over from Graham Fletcher in October.

The only goal of the game came in the 16th minute courtesy of a strike from Ella Hitchcox, the forward following up after her intial shot hit the post.

The Robins Ladies had goalkeeper Rebecca Panniers to thank for keeping the 2016 champions out after a string of fine saves ensured the 2017 winners made it through to the next round.

Cheltenham are the current holders of the competition following their dramatic penalty shoot-out win against St Nicholas Reserves in April.

This was the Robins Ladies’ second appearance of the season at the home of the men’s team, having been narrowly beaten by Maidenhead United 2-1 back in September.

Cheltenham Town Ladies will now face the Downend Flyers in the quarter-finals of the competition on February the 18th.
