Cinderford make it nine out of ten in an already impressive season

Old Redcliffians 33 – 43 Cinderford

The Forest of Deans’ proud rugby representatives Cinderford, are well 0n their way to a positive season following another victory in the National 2 South League. Away at Old Redcliffians, “Cindy” put on an impressive forwards performance as they scored over forty points. Despite an Old Reds reposte towards the end of both halves, the third place Gloucestershire side were able to hold out to the end.

From kick-off it was clear the game would be a war of attrition, with powerful tackles and decisive running lines posing real threats from both teams. The first scrum just minutes in told its own story – a usually dominant Cinderford pack reinforced their grip on the opposition, pushing Old Reds back and almost creating an attack in the process. Mauls and line-outs would feature often, particularly to the corners of the field that sloped down away from the clubhouse, providing the defensive team with a lot of work to do to hold out.

At half-time the score was 19-19. Cinderford try scorers included Robert Winchle, Tim Brockett and George Porter. The latter two of the first half scores came just in time for the visitors; James Moffat did his job well and kicked all points that were on offer.

The second forty began with the same intensity and ferocity of the first. James Moffat was the man that saved the day for Cindy. A penalty and then a converted try took the away team to a more comfortable lead that they had had since the start of the match.

However the match did quickly turn to have a lot of focus on the referee who made some questionable decisions. Director of Rugby Paul Morris said “some decisions will need some explaining to me.”

“The officials need to look at themselves as well just as we will but some of those I don’t think were penalties” added Morris.

Cinderford have now moved up to second place in the National 2 South League with this, their ninth win from ten games. Third place Taunton Titans sit just one point behind.
