Cheltenham Town Ladies 2-4 Brislington Ladies – Match Report

Cheltenham Town Ladies acting manager Andy Liddle admits his side struggled to deal with the poor conditions as his side suffered a disappointing 4-2 defeat to Brislington Ladies at Petersfield Park.

Despite late goals from Ellie Briscoe and Jen Brown-Wealls, the Robins were unable to complete a remarkable comeback from 4-0 down as they exit the FA Women’s Premier League Plate in the first round.

Brislington had a 3-0 lead over Cheltenham Town Ladies and went 4-0 in the second half.

Liddle, who is also the Chairman of the club, took over the role following former boss Graham Fletcher’s departure as manager.

The caretaker manager believes the visitors dealt with Storm Brian better than his side, but was pleased with the character shown in the second half.

“Storm Brian did us no favours in the first half as Brislington made the better of poor conditions to race into an insurmountable lead with some clinical finishing,” said Liddle.

“We regrouped and won the second half 2-1, dealing much better with Brislington. This is only our second game applying a new formation and we missed three critical players.”

Watched by 63, which was the fifth highest crowd in the WPL this weekend, the first half started with the Robins on the back foot as Brislington took the lead inside 10 minutes. The visitors capitalised on a loose ball in the Cheltenham penalty area and struck home, despite protests of a foul in the build up by the Robins’ defence.

Soon after, Cheltenham found themselves 2-0 down after failing to deal with a free-kick which was stabbed home from close range. Things went from bad to worst for the hosts as Brislington were awarded a penalty  before half-time for shirt pulling. The visitors made no mistake from the spot and went into the break with a commanding 3-0 lead.

The second half was a much better showing for Cheltenham, and despite conceding a fourth against the run of play, they managed to bag a couple of goals in the final ten minutes.

Jen Brown-Wealls scored the Robins’ second goal.

Substitute Briscoe hit a stunning individual strike into the top corner from the edge of the area to make it 4-1, before captain Brown-Wealls’ free-kick evaded everyone to sneak into the bottom corner with the last kick of the game.

Cheltenham Ladies  line-up: Panniers, Walters, Hitchcox, Brown-Wealls (C), Bull; Hateley, Morris, Fensome, Butterfield; Kay, Davies.
