REPORT: Cheltenham Town 4-1 Notts County

Goals from Will Boyle, Luke Varney, Billy Waters and Tyrone Barnett put Cheltenham Town 15 points clear from the drop zone and making it their sixth game unbeaten at the JonnyRocks Stadium.

Boyle received a great ball in from Charlie Raglan to give the home side the lead before Varney then converted the penalty.

Waters made it three after being played in by Kevin Dawson and slotting it pass Ryan Schofield.

County claimed one back with a penalty of their own from Kane Hemmings but Barnett secured all the points for the Michael Duff’s side after scoring the rebound from his previous saved shot.

Cheltenham showed their intent from the first whistle as they blew two big earlier chances before the first goal.

Varney had whipped in a great ball above the box which found Chris Hussey in acres of space but could only put his header over the bar.

Moments later Ben Tozer made a long throw it which found Boyle but the defenders shot ended up being deflected for a corner.

Notts County had some space to work with afterwards, but The Robins remained firm as they forced Virgil Gomis into a long shot going over the goal.

Eventually Cheltenham found the breakthrough after a great move from Ben Tozer which lead to space for the ball to be crossed into the box for which Boyle rises up high and gets the ball into the back of the net.

The Robins from that moment onwards dominated the game comfortably, which then lead to a fantastic run from Billy Waters beating his man Craig Mackail-Smith who ended up fouling him in the area to win the penalty. Varney comfortably made it 2-0 and his 11thof the season.

Michael Duff’s side carried on their solid performance into the next half after a fantastic through ball from Kevin Dawson put Waters through one on one tucking it past County keeper Ryan Schofield.

County did claw their way back into the game after winning a penalty. Boyle tried to win the header from the corner but instead jumps on top of Craig Mackail-Smith making it a clear penalty.

For ten minutes it looked as Notts County were close to a second after putting a huge amount of pressure on Cheltenham’s defence, with Enzio Boldewijn having a great chance.

The county forward ran into the box and cut inside and got his shot off but was fantastically blocked by Boyle.

Cheltenham eventually sealed the win after substitute Bennett shot from the delivery from the corner was saved but he followed up the rebound.

Cheltenham are in a very comfortable position right now, but Duff will be wanting to improve their away form in their upcoming match against Newport County this Friday.

Notts County still sit rock bottom of league 2 and will be hoping that they claim something against Carlisle United next week on Tuesday evening.
